Psyllium, Senna Powder, Cascara Sagrada Powder, Rose Hips, Buckthorn Powder, Peppermint, Papaya, Oregon Grape, Fennel, Celery, Lactobacillus Acidophilus
Psyllium – A bulk-forming laxative to relieve constipation or diarrhea. Can be used with irritable bowel and hemorrhoids. As a fiber it may help with blood sugar. It is also a prebiotic fiber that can help to soften hard stools as well as absorb moisture.
Senna – is an FDA approved laxative. It helps to promote a bowel movement in 6 to 12 hours. It is used for constipation, irritable bowel, fissures, and hemorrhoids. It may interact with calcium channel blockers and the drug indomethacin.
Rose Hips – is a rich source of vitamin C and helps the immune system. May help ease constipation. It has some anti-inflammatory properties and contains antioxidants. It could interact with medicines that slow blood-clotting.
Buckthorn powder – is a stimulate laxative and a natural detoxifier. It helps to shape stools into larger, softer volume. Also called cascara sagrada. In the US Pharmacopia since 1890. May interact digoxin and the corticosteroids.
Peppermint – works by relaxing the smooth muscle of the colon and helps to relieve bloating. It is used to treat flatulence, nausea, indigestion, and IBS. Also has a calming effect in the body. It blocks calcium channels in smooth muscle. It is antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant. It is one of the front-line treatments for IBS. It may interfere with cyclosporin (transplant drug) and antiacid drugs (peppermint relaxes the sphincter muscle between the esophagus and the stomach).
Papaya – rich in water, helping bowel function. It is a source of fiber and adds bulk to stools. It is high in antioxidants and is a good source of Vitamins A, B9, C, E, and K as well as magnesium and potassium and contains a natural enzyme that digests protein.
Oregon grape – used for stomach ulcers, gerd and upset stomach. Oregon grape helps to stimulate liver function and support digestive health. It helps to relieve spasms in the digestive tract. It has antimicrobial properties (meaning antibiotic, antifungal, antiparasitic). Oregon grape may interact with other antibiotics.
Fennel – aids digestion, helps the smooth muscles of the digestive tract, helps to relieve gas and bloating. Helps to relax the intestinal muscles to relieve constipation. It is fiber rich, antimicrobial and helps to reduce inflammation.
Celery – a fiber to help keep bowel movements regular. Helps to activate the gut by restoring hydrochloric acid which helps to break down food. High in magnesium and is rich in B vitamins, is a good source of Vitamin K, is antioxidant and contains sodium, potassium, and calcium. Helps with inflammation in the bowel.
Lactobacillus Acidophilus – a probiotic that helps to break down sugars, helps reduce diarrhea, bloating and cramps. It helps to improve digestion (it may help lower the PH in the bowel which helps to move the waste along). It helps the immune system and overall health. It helps to balance the good and bad bacteria to help prevent yeast infections.
Cascara sagrada - was first used by the American Indians. It means “sacred bark.” It’s made from the bark of a tree found in the northwestern U.S.
The bark contains anthraquinone glycosides. This acts as a cathartic or laxative. Cascara may help relieve constipation.
